Archdiocese of Ottawa paid altar boy $50,000 to keep quiet about priest who allegedly molested him

The Archdiocese of Ottawa paid tens of thousands of dollars to a man who alleged a priest had molested him during the 1970s when he was an altar boy, but instead of defrocking Rev. Jacques Faucher, church officials reassigned him to duties that would keep him away from children.

Documents newly obtained by Postmedia show the diocese wrote a $50,000 cheque to the man in 1998, more than a year after he told the church about the alleged sexual abuse.

The payment was made on the condition he keep details of the out-of-court settlement confidential.

The 80-year-old priest was convicted in March of six counts of indecent assault and gross indecency to three of five boys who testified against him.  (more...)
