Shawnigan teacher to get jail time for sex with student

Disgrace and shame are constant companions of once respected teacher Andy Olson now, the 36 year old losing his career and wife since initiating a sexual relationship with a teenage student 15 months ago. But a Duncan courtroom heard Thursday that the toll on his young victim has been even more devastating.

Olson has been convicted of child luring, abuse of authority and trust and sexual exploitation for the crimes committed in the 2014-2015 school year when the victim was a 17 year old female student and he was a married, live in teacher at prestigious Shawnigan Lake school, and she was a resident grade 12 student in the 2014-2015 school year.

Court heard that he initiated a sexual relationship with the girl who was described as vulnerable, and prone to depression and anxiety. In the wake of the criminal charges and fellow students finding out about them, her victim impact statement said her life was destroyed and she had to leave school. She cried in court today during the sentencing arguments, that included her mother saying: “My daughter lost one of the greatest years of her childhood. She was robbed of the freedom and fun of being a young girl. She was guilty of nothing but could not get past these feelings.”  (more...)
