Lord Janner: CPS and police were 'wrong' not to prosecute earlier, says official report

Lord Janner was not properly investigated by police over child abuse allegations and the Crown Prosecution Service missed chances to bring charges against the peer 25 years ago, an independent review has found.

Sir Richard Henriques, a retired High Court judge, found a series of failures in a review of the CPS's handling of past allegations relating to the Labour peer.

The judge described as "remarkable" a failure by Leicestershire police to hand over details of a new allegation made against Janner in 2002.

The report also found a decision not to charge Janner after a police investigation in 1991 was "wrong".

There had been enough evidence against him to provide a realistic prospect of conviction for offences of indecent assault and buggery against a 14-year-old boy, known as "Complainant 1", the report found.
