School closing process rushed to avoid public backlash, PCs charge

The provincial government is trying to pull a fast one with a new plan to expedite school closings and limit public input, charges Progressive Conservative MPP Garfield Dunlop (Simcoe North).

“The Liberals are changing the rules to fast-track school closures and shut out the voices of community leaders,” he said Thursday at Queen’s Park, referring to new guidelines quietly posted on the Ministry of Education’s website over Christmas that were quickly removed after two weeks of consultation.

“… Schools are community hubs and the heart of many local neighbourhoods and the Liberals know that. As the government forces boards to close schools, they fear the public backlash and are trying to rush the process and silently change the rules.”  (more...)
