TORONTO - The Ontario Liberal government should release its new sex education curriculum for all parents to see and comment on before implementation in the next school year, Progressive Conservative MPP Monte McNaughton says.
"This is another Liberal broken promise -- another example of Liberal contempt for voters and parents in the province of Ontario," McNaughton told Premier Kathleen Wynne Tuesday in the legislature.
"It seems you are afraid of telling parents what you intend to teach their children ... What are you trying to hide?"
McNaughton raised the issue during question period, drawing a strong response from Wynne and her fellow Liberals.
Wynne said the recent public revelations around workplace and sexual harassment point to the need for a "strong and updated and modern" sex-ed curriculum.
"I would think that given the issues that we have dealt with as a society in the last few weeks, (McNaughton) would have begun to understand that," Wynne said, apparently referencing the Jian Ghomeshi scandal and the subsequent unrelated revelations by numerous women of assault and harassment.
Speaker Dave Levac had to call for order several times as accusations flew back and forth across the legislature between the Liberals and Tories. (more...)
