Head of Rotherham's social service department signed off long-term sick 'on full pay' after refusing to resign


The head of Rotherham’s social services has been signed off on long-term sick in the wake of repeated calls to step down following the town’s child abuse scandal.

Director of children's services Joyce Thacker has been at the centre of the controversy sparked by the Jay Report, which highlighted how at least 1,400 children were exploited in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013

However, she has continually refused to step down from her post and it has now emerged that she is expected to continue to receive her 'six-figure' salary despite been signed off with illness.

Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council today confirmed Mrs Thacker had been on sick leave since Monday but said it was not appropriate to discuss the reason for her absence. It is understood she is on leave on her usual contractual terms.

Keith Vaz, the chairman of the Home Affairs committee, said Mrs Thacker being signed off 'appeared to be a fudge'.  (more...)
