Swanky digs for bureaucrats, School of Yuck for kids

TORONTO - As I write this, bureaucrats settle into their new digs across Mutual St. from my condo.

They are moving into a palace — a $100-million retrofit of the former Sears headquarters at 222 Jarvis St. The province — you and I — bought it for $83 million in 2007.

The 10-floor building is in the 1970s “brutalist” style and, frankly, it’s still butt-ugly on the outside.

But now it will house staff of four provincial ministries, including Government Services, in “green” luxury. Features include a 190-square-metre skylight and glass atrium, a nine-storey escalator, soft lighting, cool furnishings and airy offices. It looks very Zen.

The parents of kids at Golf Road Junior Public School have a rather different view of the provincial government’s zeal for luxurious retrofits.  (more...)
