If Catholic schools are like public schools: why have them?

Bishop Gary Gordon
The Yukon Government has forced the Catholic Diocese of Whitehorse to remove the Church's teaching on homosexuality in Catholic schools. The publicly funded Catholic schools have essentially given in and will no longer teach what's in the Catechism of the Catholic Church about same-sex attractions. The former Minister of Education Scott Kent had told Bishop Gary Gordon of the Diocese of Whitehorse that the Church could no longer teach that homosexual activities are "gravely depraved" and "objectively disordered." The equality provisions in Yukon law make Catholic teaching on the issue illegal. Sound familiar? It's exactly what happened in Ontario, except that the policy was called the "Equity and Inclusive education Strategy" and passed into law in 2012 with Bill 13.

What all this boils down to is that the Diocese of Whitehorse like other dioceses in Canada have chosen to change or completely withdraw the teaching on homosexuality from their schools. This would suggest that the same will be true true for marriage, the definition of the person, human sexuality and the family.  (more...)
