Police brass should have been at Sammy Yatim funeral

TORONTO POLICE CHIEF BILL BLAIR

TORONTO - If it had been Const. James Forcillo who died, Chief Bill Blair would have been at the funeral.

Along with 10,000 other police officers.

It was naive of Yatim’s family to think anybody from Toronto Police would attend.

But by being upset, they raise an excellent point.

As Chris Doucette reports, “Yatim’s family was disappointed none of the figureheads who expressed sympathy in the media this week bothered to come and pay their respects.”

It would have been out of the box thinking for leadership to go.

In this case, at this time, it would have been wise.

That none of them did signals there really is no interest in getting to the bottom of why this happened or to see if there can be improvements in dealing with emotionally distressed people.  (more...)
